Laudato Si' (On Care For Our Common Home) is the second encyclical of Pope Francis. In it, the Pope critiques consumerism and irresponsible development, laments environmental degradation and global warming and calls all people of the world to take swift and unified global action.
This encyclical is a great and timely gift to humanity. To avoid a catastrophic collision of the world economy and environment, humanity urgently needs to change the trajectory and functioning of the world economy. Lauadto Si' opens the path to a veritable revolution of ideas to bring about needed change. Click on this link to read and/or download the encyclical: Laudato Si' (On Care For Our Common Home).
Inspired by the Pope's encyclical, Archbishop Wilton Gregory enlisted the help of Susan Varlamoff, Director of the Office of Environmental Sciences at the University of Georgia, and her team of scientists to develop the UGA Action Plan for the Archdiocese of Atlanta in Response to Laudato Si.
On Tuesday April 5th 2016, Archbishop Gregory held a press conference in Rosella's Garden at the Catholic Center at UGA to announce the action plan. More than 200 people gathered at the Center to hear speakers and see Archbishop Gregory ceremonially plant a weeping cherry tree. Media coverage was provided. Here are some links for you to explore:
