Service Towards the Greater Athens and Global Community
Oasis Católico Santa Rafaela: Tutoring opportunities for UGA students are available at the Oasis, a ministry to the Hispanic community at Pinewood Estates Trailer Park run by the Handmaids of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, women religious. UGA students can get credit at UGA for tutoring at the Oasis. Visit www.oasistutors.org or Facebook group "Oasis Tutors" or contact Sr. Uyen-Chi at 706.714.664 or email her at oasistutors@gmail.com.
CSA One Time Service Events: Come serve with the Catholic Student Association throughout the semester. We volunteer one Monday a month at a different location in the Athens community. In the past we have weeded at the UGarden, sorted donations at the Northeast Georgia Food Bank, and served food to the Homeless at Bigger Vision Homeless Shelter. Contact Mariana Hernandez for more information at mh94934@uga.edu.
Spring Break Mission Trips: Each year during Spring Break, students are invited to join others in some hands-on works of mercy in such places as Philadelphia, Pine Ridge, SD and Puerto Rico. Students come back eager to share their experiences and serve in their community.
Denney Towers Project: Annually members of the Catholic Center community prepare and serve a Thanksgiving Dinner at Denney Towers, a senior assisted living facility in Athens. To volunteer contact Lynn Renna at dre@ccatuga.org.
Franciscan Volunteer MInistry (FVM): Franciscan Volunteer Ministry: The Franciscan Volunteer Ministry involves a one-year commitment after graduation to work with communities in Camden NJ, Philadelphia PA and Wilmington DE. The year of service in community provides a setting for young adults to grow in faith, love and hope by serving the poor and working for social justice. For more information, contact Lizzy Heurich at fvmadir@gmail.com.
Giving Tree: During the Advent season, you are invited to take a gift tag from the Christmas Giving Tree in the Chapel, purchase and wrap the gift(s) and bring them to the Catholic Center. Volunteers help sort and deliver the gifts. Contact Center Office in December for more information.
Service at the Catholic Center
Liturgical Ministries: We have a variety of ways you can serve at Mass. Lectors serve the community by bringing the Word of God to life. According to ancient tradition and teaching of the Church, all readings, except for the Gospel, must be proclaimed by lay persons. Extraordinary ministers assist with the orderly and reverent distribution of the Body and Blood of the Lord during communion. Mass coordinators, known as sacristans in some parishes, ensure that the chapel is ready for mass, that all necessary volunteers are available, and that mass goes off smoothly. Altar servers assist the presiding priest with several tasks during the mass. Altar servers are commonly children or young adults. If you are interested in one of these ministries, please contact Wayne Parrott at wparrott@gmail.com
Music Ministries: Every Sunday our Student Music Ministry leads worship during 5:00pm student mass. If you are interested in joining, or would like more information, please contact music@ccatuga.org
Religious Education: Many students also assist our Director of Relgious Education in teaching religious education to students ranging from pre-k to Confirmation. For more information, contact Lynn Renna at dre@ccatuga.org.
Sunday Night Dinner Ministry: We appreciate any help that students may be able to give to the Sunday Night Dinners. Help is always needed with setup, cooking and clean up. Contact the office for more information at stewardship@ccatuga.org
